The minister of edits, Jaz, follows up his amazingly ace twelves on Beard Science and Sixty Five with his first full length CD, which naturally features another 13 edits. 12 of these are previously unreleased and none of them disappoint - there's not a dud track on the disc! On 'I Played Sports' Jaz takes us right across the board, from Balearic mellowness via spacious choral cosmic rock to a mix of underground and full-on disco. All the time he never goes for the obvious heard-em-before tracks to mess with, instead these cuts will have even the the most well-versed in the Balearic / cosmic / disco arts scratching their heads in wonder. Taken from the 'Grand & Putnam' LP, Yellowtail teams up with veteran artist Monday Michiru to deliver, 'Everything is Alright', a breezy, uplifting future soul number. Featuring Yellowtail's signature rhythm, heavy bassline and warm chord progression, the track comes to completion with Monday's soaring vocals and Matt Brown's tight performance on trumpet. The single also consists of superb remixes by fellow Japanese artists Kay Suzuki, Daisuke Tanabe and U-Key. Boston-based musician/ producer U-Key comes on strong with a boogie-down disco remix while London-based Kay Suzuki gives the original a proper West London rub to spice things up. Finally, Japan-based Daisuke Tanabe takes the track into IDM-esque electronica territory keeping things fresh & glitch.

Soul Jazz Records continues its occasional re-issuing of seriously collectable deep jazz records from the 1970s, on their subsidiary Universal Sound label, with this seminal release from saxophonist Nathan Davis (current eBay price £400!). The CD comes in full slipcase with sleevenotes, interview and pics and the vinyl edition is limited to 1000 copies worldwide - so be quick! The album ‘If’ was released on Nathan Davis’s tiny bespoke Tomorrow International record label in 1976 and only 1000 copies were ever pressed. Davis leads his super-funky group along the narrow path between jazz and funk that so many failed to navigate successfully in the second-half of the 1970s. It’s an album by an artist who is a musician’s musician. More importantly - it’s a killer!
